Other Dohme Families -- Frederick Wilhelm Dohme of Wisconsin

According to the 1900 census, Frederick Wilhelm Dohme, immigrated to America in 1853 at the age of 27.  He was from Obernkirchen, Germany, having been born there August 7, 1826. He settled in Boscobel, Grant Co., Wisconsin where he married Harriet Schnee September 17, 1854.  He became a naturalized citizen March 6, 1860.  He enlisted for military service during the Civil War January 1, 1864, 3rd Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry, Co. F.

I believe this Frederick Wilhelm Dohme was a son of Frederick Wilhelm Dohme and Caroline Charlotte Harke.  His mother, Charlotte, and his siblings immigrated to America in 1852 and settled in Austin, Texas.

Frederick and Harriet had two children, William Frederick Dohme and Mary Charlotte Dohme.  His son, William, died at the age of 4, but I don't know exactly when he was born.  This information I had obtained from Frederick's obituary which was posted by someone at findagrave.com.  His daughter, Mary Charlotte, never married, so his line died out.

This is how they appeared in the 1860 census for Wingville, Grant Co., Wisconsin.

Mary Charlotte Dohme was born October 15, 1857, about three years after her parents were married.

Other Dohme Families -- Friedrich Wilhelm Dohme -- My 3x's Great-Grandfather's Older Brother

Throughout my research, I had found other families of the Dohme name who had immigrated to America during the same time period as my family.  They had settled in different parts of the country, and I am sure that they are all related to my family somehow.

The first of these families was Friedrich Wilhelm Dohme.  I mentioned him in a previous post.  He was my 3x's great-grandfather's older brother.  He married Caroline Charlotte Harke March 17, 1821 in Obernkirchen, Germany.  Friedrich apparently died sometime before 1852 because  he was not with his wife and children when they immigrated to America and settled in Austin, Texas.  They had 8 children, and they are as follows.

Emilie Augusta Dohme, born April 20, 1822 in Obernkirchen, and settled in Austin, Texas.

Carl Wilhelm Dohme, born September 18, 1824 in Obernkirchen, and died July 22, 1829 in Obernkirchen.

Friedrich Wilhelm Dohme, born August 7, 1826 in Obernkirchen, and settled in Grant Co., Wisconsin.  He married Harriet Schnee September 17, 1854 in Grant Co., Wisconsin.  This information not only came from census records, marriage records, and death records, but someone had posted his obituary on findagrave.com.  His birth and death dates were confirmed through that article. I will post more about him in another entry.

George Louis Leonhard Dohme, born October 18, 1828 in Obernkirchen.  He settled in Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio.  He married Matilda Fischer, and he became a physician.

Augusta Wilhelmine Juliane Dohme, born November 23, 1830 in Obernkirchen, and settled in Austin, Texas.

George Ferdinand Dohme, born April 22, 1833 in Obernkirchen, and settled in Austin, Texas.  He married Mary Rebecca Ruby and became a building contractor.

Gustav Heinrich Adolf Dohme, born September 22, 1835 in Obernkirchen, and settled in Austin, Texas.

Agnes C. Dohme, born November 29,1841 in Obernkirchen, and settled in Austin, Texas.  She married Louis Sommer.  She died June 4, 1922 in Austin, Texas.

There was a Wilhelm Dohme living in Austin, Texas with the family above, and originally, I thought he was the same person as Friedrich Wilhelm Dohme mentioned above.  It turns out they are not the same person.  This Wilhelm Dohme was consistently cited as having been born around 1819 or 1820 throughout the census from 1860 to 1900.  In the 1900 census, his birthdate was indicated as being February 1819 and a brother to this family.

The first record I have found for this family was the 1860 census for Austin, Travis Co., Texas.  They are listed by the first initial of their first names:  F. Dohme, C. Dohme, W. Dohme, E. Dohme, A. Dohme, A. Dohme, A. Dohme.  "C. Dohme" was Charlotte Dohme, wife of Friedrich Wilhelm Dohme, and mother of the other inhabitants of this household.

This is how they appear in the 1870 census for Austin, Texas.  You can, by the way, click on these images to see a larger version easier to read.

Ferdinand Dohme (George Ferdinand Dohme listed above), at age 37, with his wife, Maria (Mary Rebecca Ruby listed above), and their two children, Louise and Ferdinand.  Living next door to Ferdinand is Wilhelm Dohme, and his mother, Charlotte Dohme (Caroline Charlotte Harke mentioned above), and his other siblings, Adolf, Emilie, Augusta, and Agnes.

Our Family Came From Obernkirchen, Germany

Our family is from a town called Obernkirchen in Germany.  I know through some of the old church records I've managed to find, they were living in Obernkirchen as early as 1740, but it is possible it may have been earlier.  My 5x's great-grandfather was Juergen Friedrich Dohme, and it was said in a book written by Frances Dohme Cockey that he was born in a town called Klinenwieden in 1733.  Later, as an adult, Juergen moved to Obernkirchen where he met and married my 5x's great-grandmother, Sophie Elizabeth Ackmann, November 25, 1759.  So far, I have managed to find four of their children including my 4x's great-grandfather, Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Dohme.  He was the father of my 3x's great-grandfather, George Ludwig Dohme.

This is the marriage record for my 5x's great-grandparents.  I don't know if you can see it.  This is the largest size I can make this image without screwing things up.

This is the christening record for my 4x's great-grandfather, Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Dohme.   His father's name is recorded as Juergen Dohme, and he was christened on October 25, 1765.  Below Johann's name someone recorded his birthdate as October 19, 1765, and they also noted his date of death as June 16, 1839.

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Dohme married Philippine Charlotte Farlemann about 1791.  I don't have a marriage record for them yet.  She was the daughter of George Conrad Farlemann and Catherine Hedwig Roesemeier.  Below is her christening record.  She was christened February 23, 1765, so she was probably born a few days before.

Friedrich and Charlotte had, as far as I know, three children. I am not convinced, however, these were their only children.  The following are the children I've found so far:

Friedrich Wilhelm Dohme, born May 19, 1796 in Obernkirchen, Germany.  He married Caroline Charlotte Harke March 17, 1821 in Obernkirchen.  His family came to America in 1852 and settled in Austin, Texas.

George Ludwig Dohme, my 3x's great-grandfather, born November 14, 1798 in Obernkirchen.  He married my 3x's great-grandmother, Henriette Amalie Cornelius, November 8, 1823 in Obernkirchen.  They immigrated to America in 1843 and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Carl Heinrich Ludwig Dohme, born March 24, 1807 in Obernkirchen.  He married Sophie Wilhelmine Grebe in Obernkirchen.  They immigrated to America in 1852 and settled in Baltimore, Maryland.

Carl had seven children.  Two of his sons, Carl Friedrich Louis Dohme, and Charles Emile Dohme, and a man named Alpheus Phineas Sharp basically started a pharmaceutical company called Sharp & Dohme in Baltimore, Maryland.  Later, in 1953, Sharp & Dohme merged with Merck & Company.  That's the extent of our connection to the company.

George Ludwig Dohme, Henriette Amalie Cornelius, and family

They are my great-great-great-grandparents, George Ludwig Dohme and Henriette Amalie Cornelius, and for years, I knew them only as Ludwig and Henriette Dohme.  They are the parents of my great-great-grandfather, Ferdinand Dohme, whose full name was actually Ludwig Wilhelm Ferdinand Dohme.

George Ludwig Dohme was born November 14, 1798 in Obernkirchen, Germany to Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Dohme and Philippine Charlotte Farlemann.  Ludwig was originally a baker by trade, an occupation that was evidently passed down from father to son.  His father was a master baker in Obernkirchen, and Ferdinand was a baker during the first ten years of his life in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Ludwig married my great-great-great-grandmother, Henriette Amalie Cornelius, November 8, 1823 in Obernkirchen, Germany.  She was born August 24, 1804 in Rumbeck, Germany to Justus Casper Cornelius and Johanna Louise Fredericke Bohling.  Her father was a forester.

Ludwig and Henriette had four children that I know of, so far.  There is a four year gap between the year of their marriage and the year my great-great-grandfather was born in 1827, which tells me that there is a possibility they had another child during that time period.

The children of Ludwig and Henriette were:

Ludwig Wilhelm Ferdinand Dohme -- my great-great-grandfather

He was born June 16, 1827 in Obernkirchen, Germany.  He died January 13, 1899 in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He married my great-great-grandmother, Justine Marie Louise Plumhoff, July 17, 1848 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio and had 12 children.

Frederick Louis Dohme

He was born October 6, 1830 in Obernkirchen, Germany. He died July 18, 1904 in Richland Township, Darke Co., Ohio.  He married Wilhelmine Mary Rehmert March 14, 1854 in Darke Co., Ohio.  They had three children together.  After the death of Wilhelmine, Louis married a second time to Fredericke Wilhelmina Sellman January 31, 1865.  He and Fredericka had 7 children.

Caroline Charlotte Henriette Dohme

She was born April 9, 1833 in Obernkirchen, Germany.  She died January 9, 1873 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co., Missouri.  She married George Dempewolf January 30, 1851 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, and they had 6 children.

Louis Edward Dohme

He was born about February 1848 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio.  He died April 11, 1896 in Belleview, Calhoun Co., Illinois.  Louis married Sarah Adelia Gardner August 20, 1892 in Pike Co., Illinois.  They had two children, possibly three.  The third child I haven't confirmed yet.

George Ludwig Dohme died sometime between 1853 and 1855 in Cincinnati.  Cincinnati didn't start keeping birth and death records until around 1865, so I do not have a death record for my 3x's great-grandfather.  Ludwig was last listed in the Cincinnati city directories in 1853.  The city directory for 1854 had not been published for some reason, and Henriette had married her second husband, Louis Regenhardt, July 1, 1855 in Meigs Co., Ohio.
